Description

The LM 30 is a Danish-built motor sailor designed by Bent Juul Andersen and produced by LM Yachts in the 1980s. It’s a well-regarded, solidly built vessel known for its combination of sailing and motoring capabilities, making it ideal for coastal cruising.

1. Seaworthiness & Stability

  • Stable Hull Design: The LM 30 features a long fin keel with a skeg-hung rudder, offering good tracking and stability in coastal and offshore conditions.
  • Strong Construction: Built with high-quality GRP (fiberglass), the hull is robust and capable of handling rough seas.
  • Good Motion Comfort: Its moderate displacement (5000 kg) helps it ride smoothly through waves, reducing the “bounce” often experienced in lighter sailboats.

2. Motor Sailer Versatility

  • Efficient Motoring Performance: Fitted with a reliable Bukh DV36 Freshwater cooled, the LM 30 can cruise comfortably under power.
  • Dual Helm Positions: with both an inside wheelhouse helm and an outside tiller, allowing flexibility in different weather conditions.

3. Sailing Capabilities

  • Decent Sailing Performance for a Motor Sailor: While not a racer, the LM 30 has a well-balanced masthead sloop rig that provides steady sailing, especially in moderate winds.
  • Deep, Well-Protected Cockpit: Offers safety and comfort for both helming and relaxing under sail.

4. Comfort & Liveability

  • Spacious Interior: Unlike many traditional sailboats, the LM 30 has a more open and bright interior, making it feel larger than its size.
  • Pilot House with Large Windows: Offers excellent visibility and protects crew from harsh weather while allowing natural light inside.
  • Generous Headroom: Ample headroom (around 1.85m+) makes it comfortable for taller sailors.
  • Well-Designed Layout:
    • Forward Cabin: A cosy V-berth with storage.
    • Saloon: Convertible dinette and seating.
    • Galley: Well-equipped with a stove, grill, sink, and storage.
    • Enclosed Head: A proper marine toilet with a sink.

5. Build Quality & Longevity

  • Danish Craftsmanship: LM Yachts were built to high standards, with attention to detail and durability.
  • Solid Teak & Quality Materials: Interiors feature real wood finishes rather than cheap laminates.
  • Long-Lasting Hull & Deck Construction: Many LM 30s from the 1980s are still in great condition today, proving their longevity.
